Swimming at Secret Falls Kauai
Yes, you can take a dip at Secret Falls in Kauai. Also known as Uluwehi Falls, the waterfall plunges 120 feet into a fairly large plunge pool at the bottom.
If you visit in good weather conditions, you can choose to swim in the plunge pool here, although you may find the water quite cold. Many visitors cool off with a dip in the plunge pool after the hot and muddy hike through the jungle to get here.
Exercise caution, though. Do not go directly under the waterfall or too close to the cliff face, to minimize the danger from falling rocks and other debris.
Know that there may be jagged rocks just below the surface. Wear water shoes and feel your way carefully through the water. Definitely do not dive, since the water may be shallow.
Rocks by the side of the waterfall may be slippery and/or have sharp edges.
Freshwater in Hawaii may have bacteria that cause leptospirosis (or other bacteria) so be aware of the risk if you choose to swim at Secret Falls.
Wear your bathing suit under your hiking clothes, since there is nowhere to change at the waterfall. Bring a light absorbent towel to dry off.
Refresh your sunscreen and your bug spray before you start on your return hike!
